Mailing a letter seldom seems like an adventure, but every morning shikaras (boats) glide across Srinagar’s Dal Lake, as both tourists and locals alike paddle the picturesque water to deposit their mail at India’s one and only Floating Post Office. Known as Nehru Post Office until 2011, the Floating Post Office has persevered through floods with help from locals as it is one of Srinagar’s most treasured possessions.

The houseboat cum post office is also home to a philately museum (a museum dedicated to the collection and study of postage stamps) and a small shop that sells postage stamps and postcards.

Moreover, every postcard sent from the Floating Post Office receives a special stamped design, which is not only beautiful, but reminiscent of the times when mail was decorated with class. If you ever have the good fortune to visit Srinagar it might be a good idea to send somebody special a postcard from the ‘Crown of Kashmir’.
